Apprenticeship Elective: Finding Freedom
Finding Freedom from Addictive Patterns
with Cathreine Wright
Our longing is to love who we are right now, and to become all we can be. But sometimes our behaviour patterns are baffling even to ourselves. It’s as if there is a part of us that is our own worst enemy.
We think we know what we intend to do:
Eat well…. Dance every day…. Morning yoga…. Spiritual practice…. Exercise out of doors…. All that and more.
And then we don’t. And we worry that we are becoming the very worst version of ourselves.
And do you ever have those days?
A “to do” list as long as your arm, and an empty day. Seems like a good match.
“Today I will: Complete my tax return… Get up to date with my admin…. Advertise my work…”
But the empty day gets frittered away. We sabotage and undermine our own best efforts.
And then becoming all we can be recedes into the distance as impossible dream…. And love for ourselves seems like the least likely thing that we might feel.
“What is addiction really? It is a sign, a signal, a symptom of distress. It is a language that tells us about a plight that needs to be addressed.” Alice Millar in Breaking Down the Wall of Silence.
This workshop helps us bring our loving attention to the plight we are in when we sabotage ourselves. We move beyond the story of “weak will”, and begin, through the dance, to translate the language of our very own patterns, so that the patterns themselves hold the key to unlock to door to true freedom and choice.
This Movement Medicine elective brings awareness, compassion and Dance to our baffling self-sabotage. We work with the Vicious Circle and the Medicine Circle. We will explore the roles of the Victim, Persecutor, Rescuer and in particular the Hungry Ghosts that drive so much of our self sabotage. We will fully call in the medicine of the Dancing Warrior, The Dancing Fool, The Wise Elder and the Wounded Healer.
